Speaking to more than half the world¡¯s population spread across half the earth¡¯s surface, Asia-Pacific broadcasters need a strong voice.
And they have it in the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union.
The ABU, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, has currently 281 member broadcasters large and small in 69 countries spread across the region and beyond, from Turkey in the west to Samoa in the east, and from Russia in the north to New Zealand in the south.
Established in 1964 as a non-profit, non-government, professional association to assist the development of broadcasting in the region, the ABU promotes the collective interests of television and radio broadcasters and encourages regional and international co-operation between broadcasters.
Full members are national free-to-air broadcasters in the Asia-Pacific region and there is associate membership for provincial broadcasters, subscription broadcasters or national broadcasters in other parts of the world. Other organisations connected to broadcasting can hold affiliate membership.
The ABU runs a wide range of activities, including the daily Asiavision satellite TV news exchange, co-production and program exchanges and technical, programming, legal and management consultancy services, as well as industry conferences and international frequency planning and coordination. It negotiates rights for major sports events and organises coverage for the region.
With a mission to assist all members wherever possible, the ABU provides rights-free content acquisition for developing countries, organises seminars, workshops and training courses and offers annual ABU Prizes for radio and television programs. From 2012 it has organised the Asia-Pacific¡¯s first regional television and radio Song Festivals.
And keeping everyone in the loop are the ABU website and publication such as ABU News and Technical Reviews.
The ABU is funded primarily by annual subscriptions from members. It has an elected President and three Vice-Presidents, who serve three-year terms.
The ABU Secretariat is located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and is headed by a Secretary-General appointed by the General Assembly. It has over 30 staff, of whom more than a third are broadcast professionals recruited from among ABU members.
ABU works closely with the regional broadcasting unions in other parts of the world on matters of common concern, and with many other international organisations to exchange information on the latest developments in broadcasting, undertake activities to improve the skills and technologies of its members and encourage harmonisation of operating and technical broadcasting standards and systems in the region.
Most of the ABU's associate members comprise European, African and North American broadcasters, many of whom have operations in Asia, and pay-TV and cable operators in the Asia-Pacific. Its affiliate members include satellite providers, telcos, production companies, equipment vendors and regulators.

In the light of liberalization in global telecom, broadcasting, and convergence markets, the communications sector in Taiwan is also entering an era of fierce competition with diverse service provision. This at the same time indicates an increasingly complex interaction between the market and regulatory environment. Under such background, the Taiwan Communications Society (TCS) was established in 2007 as a platform to facilitate dialogues and discussions between various stakeholders in the communications policy-making process and to further ensure the public's interest.

TCS's primary role is to create an objective and impartial platform for discussions related to communications policies between the academia, government, and industry. TCS also aims to provide advice on convergence policies for Taiwan's telecom and broadcasting sectors, which are in an urgent need of a smooth transition into the next generation of communications environment. Other TCS's specific functions include hosting and organizing seminars/conference on issues related to communications policies and regulation, undertaking capacity-building research activities, and serving as a bridge for dialogue between the government and industry.

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers? (SMPTE?), has supported a century of technological advances in entertainment technology. For the past 100 years, SMPTE (pronounced "simp-tee") have sorted out the details of many significant advances in entertainment technology, from the introduction of "talkies" and color television to HD and UHD (4K, 8K) TV. Since its founding in 1916, the Society has earned an Oscar? and multiple Emmy? Awards for its work in advancing moving-imagery education and engineering across the communications, technology, media, and entertainment industries. The Society has developed thousands of standards, recommended practices, and engineering guidelines, more than 800 of which are currently in force.
SMPTE's global membership today includes 7,000 members, who are motion-imaging executives, engineers, creative and technology professionals, researchers, scientists, educators, and students. A partnership with the Hollywood Professional Association (HPA?) connects SMPTE and its membership with the professional community of businesses and individuals who provide the expertise, support, tools, and infrastructure for the creation and finishing of motion pictures, television programs, commercials, digital media, and other dynamic media content.

?In the early 1900's, the soon-to-be motion picture industry was unorganized, lacking structure and leadership. Equipment was built differently according to each manufacturer, and standard practice was nonexistent.
At the same time, a world war was threatening, and the army saw a need for motion pictures for training and recording military events. The U.S. government attempted to bring order to this demanded industry by creating a body to lead development in motion pictures. The government looked to an inventor from Washington D.C. named C.F. Jenkins to chair the organization. Jenkins had developed the first motion picture projector in 1895 along with Thomas Armat, as well as several unique imaging devices, such as an underwater camera, and a panoramic camera for aerial views.
After two unsuccessful attempts at starting this organization, Jenkins met with two of his close colleagues to discuss a solution. Jenkins, E.K. Gillett, and N.I. Brown gathered on the Boardwalk of Atlantic City one day during the spring of 1915. They discussed past failures to generate an organized group to lead the motion picture industry, while recalling the successes of other engineering societies.
One year later, in July of 1916, the three men along with seven additional engineers met in Washington D.C. A unanimous decision was made to create a society of engineering specialists in the motion picture field. A constitution was then created, and Jenkins was named chairman of the Society of Motion Picture Engineers (SMPE).
In October of 1916, the group ratified the constitution, established committees, and elected Jenkins as president.
The "T" was added to the Society in 1950 to embrace the emerging television industry.
Today, SMPTE is recognized as the global leader in the development of standards and authoritative practices for film, television, video and multimedia.
To accomplish its educational goals, SMPTE organizes annual conferences and seminars. It also publishes the highly regarded SMPTE Journal, which is recognized around the world for its well-researched technical papers, tutorials, practical application articles, standards updates and SMPTE Section Reports.
